ABC Projection: RSP Poised to Secure 75–85 FPTP Seats, With PR 135–155 secured

ABC News Kathmandu: Early trends from the ongoing counting of votes in Nepal’s House of Representatives election are painting a picture of historic political upheaval. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) — symbolized by the ringing bell — has surged ahead in a sweeping wave across multiple provinces, challenging the dominance of traditional parties and signaling a decisive shift toward youth-driven, alternative politics.

From Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari in the east to the Madhesh Province, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim in the west, the “bell wave” has taken hold. Preliminary counting data shows RSP candidates leading by thousands of votes in key constituencies.

Geographic Breakdown of RSP Leads (Early Trends)

  • Eastern Region (Jhapa–Morang–Sunsari): Leading in most of the 15 seats.
  • Madhesh Province: Leading in 25 out of 32 seats.
  • Chitwan: Leading in 3 seats.
  • Both Nawalparasi districts: Leading in 3 seats.
  • Rupandehi: Leading in 4 out of 5 seats.
  • Dang: Leading in 3 seats.
  • Banke: Leading in 2 seats.
  • Bardiya: Leading in 1 seat.
  • Kailali: Leading in 2 out of 5 seats.
  • Kanchanpur: Leading in 3 seats.

In the Bagmati Province Kathmandu Valley, RSP is dominating 14 out of 15 constituencies. In Gandaki Province, the party leads in all 3 seats in Kaski and 1 in Tanahun.

Direct Seat Projection If current trends hold, RSP is on track to win 75–85 direct (first-past-the-post) seats — a massive breakthrough for a party that was virtually non-existent in national politics just a few election cycles ago.

Proportional Representation (PR) Outlook At the current vote-share ratio, RSP could capture around 50% of the PR votes, translating to at least 55 seats out of the 110 proportional seats. With votes scattered among smaller parties (RPP, JSP, Janamat, Nepal Workers Peasants Party, Ujyalo Nepal, Shram Sanskriti, etc.), RSP stands to gain an additional 5 seats from vote fragmentation.

Total Projected Seats Combining direct and proportional results, RSP could end up with 135–155 seats — comfortably crossing the 138-seat majority threshold in the 275-member House. This would give the party a clear mandate to form the next government, marking the most decisive victory by any single party since the restoration of multiparty democracy.

Why This Massive Wave?

  • Youth & Social Media Power: Leaders like Balendra Shah (Baleni) and Ravi Lamichhane, combined with viral anti-corruption campaigns, mobilized young voters in unprecedented numbers.
  • Disillusionment with Traditional Parties: Widespread frustration over corruption, instability, and lack of concrete agendas pushed voters toward a fresh alternative.
  • Regional Resonance: In the Tarai, ethnic and identity issues blended with the party’s change narrative; in urban centers, the promise of clean governance resonated strongly.

Caveat These are early trends only — vote counting continues across the country and final results could shift. However, the momentum is unmistakable: the bell is ringing louder than ever, and it shows no signs of stopping.

The Election Commission has maintained strict oversight to ensure a fair and transparent count. More updates are expected hourly as counting progresses. This election appears poised to open the door to a genuinely new political era in Nepal.
