U.S. Congratulates Rabi Lamichhane After Landmark Electoral Victory

एबीसी न्यूज
चैत्र ११, २०८२ बुधबार  १२ : ४९ बजे

Kathmandu | The United States has extended formal congratulations to Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, following his party’s decisive performance in Nepal’s recent national elections. The move reflects Washington’s early diplomatic engagement with Nepal’s emerging political leadership after a vote widely seen as a turning point in the country’s politics .

According to the U.S. Embassy in Nepal, the message was conveyed through a phone call by Sergio Gor, the U.S. special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. The call, made on March 23 (Chaitra 10), included congratulations to Lamichhane and acknowledgment of the public mandate received by his party.

In a statement posted by the embassy, Washington expressed its willingness to work closely with Nepal’s incoming government. “The United States looks forward to working with Nepal’s new government to strengthen our economic partnership and deepen the friendship between our two countries,” the statement said.

The outreach comes at a critical political juncture. The rise of the Rastriya Swatantra Party—just a few years after its formation—signals a broader transformation in Nepal’s political landscape. Voter dissatisfaction with traditional parties, coupled with demands for transparency, accountability, and governance reform, has fueled the party’s rapid ascent. Lamichhane, a former media figure turned political leader, has emerged as a prominent face of this shift, particularly among younger voters.

For the United States, the congratulatory gesture carries both diplomatic and strategic significance. Nepal remains an important partner in South Asia, with cooperation spanning economic development, governance reform, health, and infrastructure. By reaching out early, Washington appears keen to ensure continuity in bilateral ties despite Nepal’s internal political change .

Observers also note that the move reflects broader geopolitical considerations. As regional influence dynamics evolve—particularly with increasing engagement by neighboring powers—the United States is seeking to maintain strong relations with Kathmandu’s new leadership.

While the final contours of Nepal’s next government are still taking shape, Washington’s message underscores a clear intent: to engage constructively with new political actors and to reinforce long-standing cooperation. The interaction between Lamichhane and U.S. officials may thus mark the beginning of a recalibrated phase in Nepal-U.S. relations—one aligned with both strategic interests and the democratic aspirations of Nepal’s electorate.
