Insignia conferred on new IGP Gyawali

Kathmandu February 12.
Insignia has been conferred on newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Thakur Prasad Gyawali, today. At an investiture programme organsied at the Home Ministry, Home Secretary Maheshwor Neupane, conferred the insignia of IGP on Gyawali. A cabinet meeting held on Tuesday had promoted Gyawali to the IGP post effective from today. The government promoted Deputy Inspector General Gyawali to IGP post after IGP Sarbendra Khanal took mandatory retirement on completion of 30 years of service term. On the occasion, Home Secretary Neupane urged the police leadership to be active to maintain peace and security of the people, and law and order in the country. Indicating that criminal activities might be increased in lack of activeness of police organisation, he asked the organisation not to make any compromise in peace and security. Neupane further said that it was necessary for police officers to correct themselves, saying personal interest is finding place in the organisation rather than institutional one. Accepting that there are some problems in adjustment of Nepal Police as well as in dealing with criminal activities, the Home Secretary stressed the need of moving ahead in a collective way for the same. He informed that necessary process would move ahead soon as two bills related to Nepal Police have been recently certified by the President. Informing that review meeting of high management is being held at the Home Ministry every week, Neupane expressed the belief that the meeting would help resolve the problems surfaced in security sector. Pointing out that motivating the police personnel and curbing crimes was the need of the day, he said the police’s role would be significant in building a prosperous Nepal. “If we fail to maintain law and order, it would adversely affect the campaign of building a prosperous Nepal. I want to draw the police officers’ attention towards this,” he exhorted. Police adjustment and crime control are present challenges: newly-appointed IGP In the programme, newly-appointed Inspector General of Police Gyawali said controlling crime and adjustment of police were the present challenges for the police organisation. He expressed the organisation’s determination to overcome this challenge. As he said, although the country has adopted federalism, legally not all processes have been federalized. Stating he was committed to constitution implementation and protecting citizen’s rights in his capacity as the Inspector General of Police, IGP Gyawali pledged to execute the Home Ministry’s guidelines in letter and spirit. He also expressed the determination that he would not make any compromise in enforcing the law by blunting the undesirable and violent activities. The IGP was confident that any barriers before the country that is rising on the horizon of prosperity, development and good governance would be defeated. IGP Gywali also reiterated that police needed to carry out works winning the people’s hearts in the present age of public accountability. He added that his focus would be on maintaining high morale of the police personnel, sternly warning against any untoward activities in police garb.
