Banepa, June 26: Consumers in Banepa and Panauti municipalities in Kavrepalanchok district are compelled to use murky and slimy water with the onset of the monsoon.
The distribution of polluted water by the Water Supply Corporation in these two towns during the rainy season for many years has had negative impact on human health. Banepa and Panauti have been facing acute shortage of water during the lean period.
Chief of the Water Supply Corporation Banepa branch, Buddha Ratna Maharjan said they were supplying murky water for the lack of water filtration plant. He added that potable water could be supplied only after the completion of the Kavre Valley Water Supply Project.
Maharjan stated that in the rainy season water is directly supplied to the consumers without filtering due to lack of filter and it was likely that the consumers will have to put up with this problem for some years more.
The Water Supply Corporation has been supplying nearly 200 thousand litres water in Banepa and Panauti municipalities.
Kavre Valley Integrated Water Supply Project Steering Committee coordinator Ashok Byanju said 64 percent of the project’s works have been completed and claimed the project would complete by December this year.
He said 10 thousand consumers in Banepa, Panauti and Dhulikhel municipalities will get water in their taps at home after the project’s completion. The project’s estimated cost is 940 million.
Buddha Ratna Suwal, a consumer of Banepa Municipality-8, said they were not using the water distributed by the Water Supply Corporation for drinking purposes but only for washing clothes and cleaning the toilet.
“They have been charging us for water but we have not ever got quality water,” he complained.
He said the corporation which otherwise distributed water for one hour only, has however been distributing it without any schedule in the rainy season. RSS
