Kathmandu. September. 15.The attraction of breast-feeding campaign has increased in Nakasal, Balmandir. Newly born infants who have lost their parents, and toddlers found in street are provided with food and shelter here. This campaign was started in the month of February, last year. Now, the number of the women who want to breast-feed such infants have reached six.
The locals rescued an infant who was found in Lalitpur’s Imadol and handed over to Bal Mandir at Naksal. The infants was suffering from malnutrition and it had very low weight as well. He had a symptom of a disease called nitro-hearing ambulatory hernias. So, infant is weaned through a bottle. However, it could not drink the milk from the bottle. They tried a lot to make it drink the milk but it ran out of the nose instead. To follow the suggestion of the doctor they had to treat the baby with breast milk. After all, he had no mother for the breast milk, Anita Kumpakha started feeding the baby. Wow, the boy, named Premis, began receiving maternal care from then onwards. And therefore, this is the start of excellent work of breastfeeding.
In this Balmandir, there are now 90 unaccompanied kids. Out of which 17 are infants, 12 are of 18 to 36 months. Police have also rescued many infants and children that were found in street and many other places. Likewise, the babies left at the hospital and those found in the hospital and other places will be taken to the child temple through local, ward, and municipality. If such children are found is this situation we might ask for help directly by contacting them to the Bal Mandir. This Bal Mandir, was established by the then Queen Ratna Rajya Lakshmidevi Shahdhara, in the year 2068 BS. There are 10 Balmandir all over the country. Anita Kompakha, has started breastfeeding for infants in the place. So far, there are five such mothers in the Bal mandir. However, the mothers have not bcome able to give continuity to breastfeeding due to various reasons, including domestic and other problems, ie personal problems.
Therefore, to make this breastfeeding campaign more popular and widespread, even public awareness programs and activities have been conducted in the various wards of the Kathmandu Municipal Corporation. Such mothers are breastfeeding especially for those infants who are undernourished and underweight. However, when babies are thirsty for milk, they are still not getting breast milk adequately on time. Internal discussions are under way for the plan of providing various facilities for the lactating mother along with employment and housing facilities in the Balmandir, said Bal Krishna Dangol, the director of the child care centre, orphanage.
Lactating mothers of the age group from 25 to 30 are feeding these infants along with their offspring. These mothers are from Sundarjal, Chabahil, Baluwatar, Lalitpur and other places of Kathmandu. These lactating mothers come here to breastfeed by carrying their babies. Some female employees of the childcare centre are also willingly breastfeeding these infants. They are also encouraged and suggested lactating mothers to breastfeed their infants as much as possible. In the past infants used to be unhealthy but now they look healthy and happy.
Same like Pramish other 15 children are also getting mother’s milk.
Even now, there are five to three women regularly visit the orphanage. Some people are breastfeeding their children every day for some days. As these mothers breastfeed, the health of such babies who are malnourished and underweight is gradually improving. Therefore, it is imperative for state to run awareness program for the mothers who want to breastfeed-abandoned children.
